Using Tables

FEN editors recommend that authors create tables in an offline software program such as Microsoft Word. Once a table exists in software that is compatible with ZOPE, it is easy to upload it to an encyclopedia page. Authors con either 1) create a table from the content View of a parent page or 2) create a table within the Body Text editor.

If you want to create a new table from content View, find the parent page (the place in your contribution where the table will be inserted) and go to the View version of the page. In the upper right hand corner, click on "Select" and choose "Table" from the drop-down menu that appears. Then, click "add new item" on the right. The new table insertion dialog box will appear. Enter the appropriate information in the fields:

  • title
  • author/contributor
  • copyright
  • description
  • permission of use

You will then need to create a link to the table within the Body text editor (see below for instructions).

To insert a link to a table, if you prefer to create a table within the Body Text editor, go to the Edit version of the appropriate parent page and place the cursor at the location on the encyclopedia page where you wish the link to the table to appear. Select the table icon at the top of the Body Text editor or type CTRL-shift C to bring up the table dialog box. In the table dialog box you have two options for locating the table you want to link to the text:

If the table already exists somewhere in your workspace, select "browse my desktop for existing tables." Click on "browse the encyclopedia for existing tables", click on the file name, and click on the file name and click "OK." If the table exists in the encyclopedia network system, click on "browse the encyclopedia for existing tables", click on the file name, and click "OK." If the hyperlink was successfully inserted, your cursor will reappear in the Body Text editor marking the location of the new hyperlink with blue, underlined text and a title such as this one: (Table:Upland White Oak).

Be sure to follow the style guide for creating a new table.
