Style for References

FEN uses the same citation style guide that is used by the Southern Research Station, USDA Forest Service.  Authors are responsible for formatting citations in the appropriate way. Please have your citations style guide on-hand when you are creating new citations. Contact an editor to obtain a copy of the style guide.

In text citations should be used in the normal journal style, such as (Jones 2002).  Citations with multiple authors should be separated by a coma, for example  (Jones 2002, Smith 1999).  Wherever possible, tie the citations to specific statements that are attributable to an author.

Citations vary considerably with numerous inconsistencies and troublesome anomalies. There is no way a guide like this can cover all cases encountered, nor is there a way for an automated system to define each and every one of these idiosyncrasies. When in doubt, please contact a FEN editor using the FEEDBACK option at the top of each encyclopedia page.

There are three main ways to get citations into FEN:

  • Direct Entry: Enter them into the FEN system using the editor provided;
  • Procite Database Exists: Provide FEN editors with a PROCITE or ENDNOTES database containing your references;
  • Text-based Citations Exist: Convert a text-based listing of references such as might appear at the end of a MS Word manuscript into a PROCITE database.  Once a PROCITE database exists, request through a FEN editor to have it uploaded automatically.
