Imperiled Birds

In the southern Appalachians there are three threatened and endangered bird species (SAMAB 1996):

  1. Bald eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus)
  2. Red-cockaded woodpecker (Picoides borealis)
  3. American peregrine falcon (Falco peregrinus anatum)

In addition, viability concerns exist for a number of other birds in the southern Appalachians (SAMAB 1996):

  1. Bachmans sparrow (Aimophila aestivalis)
  2. Appalachian Bewicks wren (Thryomanes bewickii altus)
  3. Henslows sparrow (Ammodramus henslowii)
  4. Loggerhead shrike (Lanius lodovicianus)
  5. Northern goshawk (Accipiter gentilis)
  6. Cerulean warbler (Dendroica cerulea)
