Imperiled Reptiles and Amphibians

In the southern Appalachians there are two threatened and endangered amphibian species (SAMAB 1996):

  1.  Cheat Mountain salamander (Plethodon nettingi)
  2.  Shenandoah salamander (Plethodon shenandoah

A number of reptiles and amphibians are thought to have viability concerns (SAMAB 1996): 

Reptiles 

  1. Bog turtle (Clemmys muhlenbergii)
  2. Northern pine snake (Pituophis melanoleucus melanoleucus)

Amphibians 

  1. Tennessee cave salamander (Gyrinophilus palleucus)
  2. West Virginia spring salamander (Gyrinophilus subterraneus)
  3. Green salamander (Aneides aeneus
  4. Pigeon Mountain salamander (Plethodon petraeus)
  5. Peaks of Otter salamander (Plethodon hubrichti)
  6. Cow Knob salamander (Plethodon punctatus)
  7. Seepage salamander (Desmognathus aeneus)
  8. Dark-sided (brownback) salamander (Eurycea aquatica)
  9. Junaluska salamander (Eurycea junaluska)
