Imperiled Reptiles and Amphibians

In the southern Appalachians there are two threatened and endangered amphibian species (SAMAB 1996):
- Cheat Mountain salamander (Plethodon nettingi)
- Shenandoah salamander (Plethodon shenandoah)
A number of reptiles and amphibians are thought to have viability concerns (SAMAB 1996):
Reptiles
- Bog turtle (Clemmys muhlenbergii)
- Northern pine snake (Pituophis melanoleucus melanoleucus)
Amphibians
- Tennessee cave salamander (Gyrinophilus palleucus)
- West Virginia spring salamander (Gyrinophilus subterraneus)
- Green salamander (Aneides aeneus)
- Pigeon Mountain salamander (Plethodon petraeus)
- Peaks of Otter salamander (Plethodon hubrichti)
- Cow Knob salamander (Plethodon punctatus)
- Seepage salamander (Desmognathus aeneus)
- Dark-sided (brownback) salamander (Eurycea aquatica)
- Junaluska salamander (Eurycea junaluska)
