Managing Established Yellow-Poplar Stands

Authored By: D. E. Beck, L. Della-Bianca

Yellow-poplar has characteristically high growth rates, and yellow-poplar stands can produce considerable quantities of high-quality products with no intermediate stand management. However, unmanaged yellow-poplar stands typically contain many trees of less than merchantable size for saw and veneer logs. Hence, cultural practices, such as commercial thinning, are recommended to redirect wood growth into fewer but larger trees. The following sections discuss several topics related to managing established stands of yellow-poplar.
