Encyclopedia of Forest Environmental Threats
Welcome! The Encyclopedia of Forest Environmental Threats promises to deliver to researchers, land managers, and policymakers the scientific knowledge about environmental threats they need to achieve their objectives. Currently under development, this encyclopedia—like the others in the Forest Encyclopedia Network—will connect scientific results, conclusions, and impacts with management needs and issues. Content is being assembled with an official launch scheduled for June 2008.
Until the official launch, explore this site to learn more about the encyclopedia and its progress. Check out the abstracts from the conference presentations to get an idea of the topics we'll be covering--the encyclopedia will be drawing on content from most syntheses and case studies.
Encyclopedia Content
Peer-reviewed scientific syntheses and case studies have been solicited from researchers across North America. Topical areas to be addressed in the encyclopedia include:
Land (wildland loss, soil quality)
Air and Water (severe weather, air pollution, climate change, flooding)
Fire (ignition, severity and spread, post-fire)
Pests/Biota (native, exotic, and dispersion)
The encyclopedia's initial content will come from 49 synthesis and case study papers presented in July 2006 in Boulder, Colorado, at the "Advances in Threat Assessment and Their Application to Forest and Rangeland Management" conference. These papers have competed peer review and technical editing and are currently being edited for style and imported to the encyclopedia. More than 170 researchers and managers attended the conference, jointly sponsored by the Eastern Forest Environmental Threat Assessment Center and the Western Wildland Environmental Threat Assessment Center.
Print Product
In addition to being published here, the encyclopedia's initial contents will also be printed as a USDA Forest Service general technical report. Jointly produced by the Pacific Northwest and Southern Research Stations, it will be published after the Web encyclopedia is launched in 2008.
